Dalriada
Project Overview
Set within a private Dublin garden, Dalriada was conceived as more than a garden room. The vision was to create a fully self-sufficient retreat that combines contemporary architecture, intelligent use of space, and Scandinavian-inspired interiors within a compact 24.3 m² footprint.
Designed to feel calm, warm, and connected to nature, the studio delivers everything needed for comfortable day-to-day living while maintaining a strong architectural presence within the landscape.

The Brief
The client wanted a garden studio that could function independently from the main house while remaining visually connected to the surrounding garden.
The space needed to provide:
- A bright and inviting living area
- A fully equipped bathroom
- Kitchen facilities for everyday use
- Additional sleeping accommodation
- High levels of comfort and privacy
- A timeless architectural appearance
The challenge was to achieve all of this within a compact footprint without compromising the feeling of openness and space.

Architecture That Feels Larger Than Its Footprint
At 24.3 m², every square metre was carefully considered.
The building’s pitched roof creates a generous sense of volume, while large glazed openings flood the interior with natural daylight. Dark-framed windows and doors contrast against the light rendered exterior, creating a contemporary yet welcoming appearance.
A compact entrance deck provides a transition between the garden and the studio, allowing the building to sit naturally within its surroundings.
From the outside, the design remains elegant and understated. Inside, the studio reveals a surprisingly spacious and versatile interior.
Scandinavian-Inspired Interior
The interior was designed around a Scandinavian design philosophy, combining natural materials, simplicity, and functionality.
Light finishes, warm timber elements, and carefully selected textures create a calm and relaxing atmosphere throughout the space.
At the heart of the studio sits a beautifully crafted kitchenette inspired by contemporary Icelandic and Nordic interiors. Clean lines, natural tones, and practical storage solutions allow the kitchen to integrate seamlessly into the living environment while maintaining a refined architectural aesthetic.
The result is an interior that feels bright, uncluttered, and effortlessly welcoming.

Self-Sufficient Living
One of the defining features of Dalriada is its ability to operate as a truly independent space.
The studio includes a fully fitted bathroom complete with its own dedicated hot water system, providing comfort and convenience without relying on the main dwelling.
Designed for flexibility, the studio can serve as:
- Guest accommodation
- A private home office
- Creative studio
- Wellness retreat
- Teenager’s den
- Occasional overnight accommodation
- Additional living space for family and friends
Its self-contained nature allows the building to adapt to changing needs over time.
The Mezzanine
Perhaps the most charming feature of Dalriada is its elevated mezzanine level.
Positioned above part of the main living space, the mezzanine creates a unique sleeping area while preserving valuable floor space below.
Accessed by a handcrafted oak ladder, the upper level introduces a sense of character and adventure reminiscent of Scandinavian cabin design. The sleeping loft transforms the studio into a practical overnight retreat while adding architectural interest and visual depth to the interior.
The combination of the vaulted ceiling and mezzanine creates a space that feels far larger than expected from the outside.

Built Around Natural Light
Large glazed doors and carefully positioned windows establish a strong connection between the interior and the garden.
Throughout the day, natural light moves through the studio, enhancing the warm materials and creating an ever-changing atmosphere. The visual connection to the surrounding landscape helps the interior feel calm, open, and expansive.
Project Outcome
Dalriada demonstrates how intelligent design can transform a compact footprint into a fully functional living environment.
By combining contemporary architecture, Scandinavian-inspired interiors, self-sufficient facilities, and a cleverly integrated mezzanine sleeping area, the project delivers a versatile garden retreat that feels both practical and exceptional.
The result is a beautifully crafted garden studio that offers independence, comfort, and architectural character — a private sanctuary designed to evolve with the needs of its owners.
